What to expect on the Mount Batur sunrise jeep, hour by hour

Short answer
Expect a 02:00–03:00 hotel pickup, a crater-rim viewpoint around 1,350 metres before first light, and dawn behind Mount Agung over Lake Batur at about 06:00–06:30. After the lava field and breakfast you are back in Ubud around 09:00–10:00. It is cold at the rim, and no hiking is needed.

Hour by hour
This is the morning on the 4×4 tracks of Mount Batur in Kintamani, from the knock on your door to breakfast. Times move a little with the season's sunrise; we confirm your pickup minute on WhatsApp the day before.

How long is the Mount Batur jeep tour?
Most of the time is the drive. The jeep part, from the Kintamani base through the viewpoint and lava field to breakfast, takes roughly 3 hours. The rest is the hotel car each way.

What to wear on the jeep tour
The viewpoint is around 1,350 metres up and windy before dawn, far colder than the coast. Guests in shorts and a T-shirt are the ones huddled in the jeep at sunrise. Dress in layers you can take off once the sun is up.
- A warm layer or light jacket you can sit in, and long trousers
- Closed shoes; they are required on the tracking walk, and the lava field is sharp underfoot
- A hat or beanie for the wait at the rim
- Clothes you do not mind getting dusty on the black sand
- Swimwear and a change of clothes if you add a hot spring
- A charged phone or camera, a cloth for mist on the lens, and some small rupiah notes
Mount Batur jeep tour with kids
The sit-in jeep is the family option: nobody has to walk, and children can sleep in the car on the way up. The ride on the volcanic tracks is bumpy, so keep younger children seated inside while the jeep is moving.
- Insurance covers about ages 6–65. Tell us every guest's age when you book.
- Bring a blanket or extra layer for children; they feel the cold at the rim first.
- Pack a snack. Breakfast comes after the viewpoint, 4 hours or more after pickup.
- If a 02:00 alarm is too much, the sunset jeep is the same price and finishes in the evening.
Getting the sunrise photo
- The sky colours 20–30 minutes before the sun appears. Be at the viewpoint for that, not just for the sun.
- Use the jeep as your foreground. Drivers know where to park for a clear line over the lake.
- Shoot silhouettes against the brightest part of the sky, then turn round: the light on the caldera walls behind you is often the better picture.
- Save some battery for the lava field after sunrise.
If cloud covers the sunrise
The tour still runs and the price is the same. Mornings are usually clearer from May to October; from November to April, cloud fills the crater more often. It often lifts during the lava field stop and breakfast, so the morning is rarely a write-off. Nobody can promise a clear Mount Agung.
Sunrise jeep prices
The jeep is private. Sit-in is Rp 2.000.000 for two guests. Tracking, with the short guided walk, is Rp 1.800.000 for two. From three guests, both are Rp 750.000 each. Hotel pickup, the hot drink, the entrance fee, breakfast, and insurance are included.
Sunrise jeep, sunrise trek, or sunset jeep?
Book the sunrise jeep for the classic dawn view without a climb. Book a summit trek guide if standing on the top is the point. Book the sunset jeep, at the same price, if a 02:00 alarm is not an option.
