Mount Batur jeep: sunrise or sunset?

Short answer
Book sunrise for the classic view of dawn breaking behind Mount Agung over Lake Batur, if you can face a 02:00–03:00 pickup. Book sunset for an afternoon start, a full night's sleep, and a quieter viewpoint. Both use the same private jeep and the same lava field, at the same price.

Choose sunrise if
- The dawn photo over Mount Agung is the reason you came
- You want a hot spring or coffee stop afterwards and the rest of the day free
- You travel in the wet season, November to April, when afternoons cloud over more often
Choose sunset if
- You have young children or anyone who does not cope with a 02:00 alarm
- You are on a surf or beach schedule in Canggu, Seminyak, or Uluwatu
- You want the viewpoint without the sunrise crowd
- You already did sunrise on a trek and want the lava field in different light
Weather and season
From May to October both times are usually clear. In the wet season, cloud and showers build in the afternoon more often, which tips the odds toward sunrise. Neither is guaranteed: cloud can fill the crater on any day, and the jeep still runs.
Sunrise in Bali falls between about 06:00 and 06:30 depending on the month. The jeep is at the viewpoint before first light, which is why the pickup is so early.
