Sunrise, sunset, or the trek
Sunrise is the classic: dawn behind Mount Agung over Lake Batur, with a 02:00–03:00 pickup. It is also the busiest time on the mountain. The sunset jeep costs the same, picks up at 14:30–15:30, and the viewpoint is usually much quieter.
If standing on the summit is the point, book the sunrise trek instead: about two hours of climbing in the dark. The jeep stops at the crater-rim viewpoint below the summit and adds the lava field, with no hike on the sit-in option.
