Is a Bali ATV ride safe, and is it worth it?

Updated · By the Bali Activity Tours desk in Ubud

Short answer

Yes. A guided ATV ride near Ubud is built for beginners: no licence or experience is needed, you get a briefing on flat ground, a helmet and boots, and you ride single-file behind a guide on a set jungle loop. The real risks are riding too fast and ignoring the guide. It is worth it if you want a muddy, physical half day.

What the Sedang jungle loop near Ubud is really like: the briefing, the mud, the river crossings, the waterfall, the lion-head tunnel, the age limits, and who should take a tandem.

What the ride is like

The ride runs at All New Bali Adventure on Jl. Raya Krasan in Sedang, a dedicated jungle arena about 30 minutes south-west of central Ubud. It is an authentic off-road jungle track, not a convoy on village roads: the loop takes you along a muddy jungle track through deep mud, puddles, bamboo, and river crossings, past a waterfall, and through a giant lion-head tunnel with water pouring over the entrance. Being off the public road is also part of what keeps the ride safe.

Allow 2–4 hours including the briefing, the ride, a rinse, and lunch. You will finish muddy; that is the point.

How the ride is kept safe

  • A briefing in English on flat ground before you enter the track
  • A helmet and arena boots fitted for every rider
  • Riding single-file behind a guide on a set loop, not open terrain
  • No licence or quad experience needed
  • A tandem option, where a confident adult drives and a nervous rider or child sits behind
  • Insurance for ages 6–65 in the ticket

What keeps you safe on the track

Most trouble comes from speed, not from the track. Keep the gap the guide sets, do not overtake, and slow down before river crossings. If a section worries you, wave to the guide: they slow the whole group down.

  • Both hands on the handlebars, feet on the footrests
  • Sunglasses on a strap, or left in the car
  • No racing, no stunts, no riding off the line

Is it worth the money?

Bali ATV listings run from about Rp 500.000 to Rp 800.000 for a single quad and Rp 600.000 to Rp 1.100.000 for a tandem. Ours sit in the middle, with lunch, boots, helmet, and insurance included, and no charge if you drive yourself to the arena.

Who should not ride

Skip the quad if you are pregnant or have a serious back or neck problem; the track is bumpy. Children under about 6 are outside the insurance. In those cases, the sit-in Batur jeep or a calm Wos River tube float are better days out.
