Best food in Bali: warungs, dadar gulung, and where to eat

Updated · By the Bali Activity Tours desk in Ubud

Short answer

The best everyday Bali food is at warungs: babi guling, bebek betutu, sate lilit, nasi campur, and mie goreng, priced in thousands of rupiah — not hotel buffets. For dessert, try dadar gulung: a green pandan crepe rolled around grated coconut and palm sugar. “Best restaurant” depends on budget: Seminyak fine dining for a night out; Ubud warungs and night markets for local flavour after an ATV or rafting day.

What to eat in Bali, why warungs beat generic “best restaurant” lists, how to order dadar gulung, and how lunch on our tickets fits an adventure day.

What is the best food in Bali?

Start with Balinese and Indonesian plates locals eat daily: babi guling (roast pork) in Gianyar or Denpasar, bebek betutu (slow-cooked duck), lawar, sate lilit, and nasi campur. Seafood warungs on Jimbaran beach work for sunset; Ubud’s central market and side-street warungs work for lunch after a morning activity.

Skip ranking one “best restaurant in Bali” — the island has thousands. Match the meal to the day: warung for value and flavour, beach club for a long lunch, fine dining in Seminyak or Ubud for a celebration.

Try dadar gulung

Dadar gulung (also spelled dadar gulungs in some menus) is a soft green crepe coloured with pandan, filled with sweet grated coconut and palm sugar, then rolled. Look for it at traditional markets, roadside cake stalls, and some warung dessert trays — usually a few thousand to tens of thousands of rupiah per piece.

It is not spicy. It travels well as a snack after a muddy ATV rinse or a river lunch. If a stall labels it kue dadar, it is the same family of snack.

Restaurants vs warungs (and lunch on our tickets)

Warungs are small family eateries; restaurants range from tourist menus to tasting menus. For “best restaurant” searches, use Google Maps ratings in the neighbourhood you are sleeping in — not a global top-10 list written for clicks.

Sedang ATV and Ayung rafting tickets on this desk include lunch at the venue after the ride or paddle. That covers the mid-day meal so you can save warung hopping for dinner. Combos include two lunches when both activities are on the same ticket.
