Living in Bali: visas, cost, locals, and daily life

Updated · By the Bali Activity Tours desk in Ubud

Short answer

Living in Bali means Indonesian immigration rules (tourist stay, remote-worker visas, or KITAP paths change — always check official immigration), rupiah costs that stay lower than most Western cities for food and help, and traffic plus humidity as the daily tax. Tourists and digital nomads cluster in Canggu, Ubud, and Seminyak; Balinese family compounds and banjar life continue underneath. Learn basic Bahasa, respect temple days, and budget scooters or drivers — not only café Wi-Fi.

What “living in Bali” actually involves for long stays: cost shape, culture next to locals, and weekend activities priced in IDR.

Can you live in Bali?

Yes, many foreigners rent long-term — but living legally needs the right Indonesian visa or stay permit. Tourist stamps are not a work visa. Rules change; use official immigration sources or a licensed agent, not a café rumour.

Daily life: tropical heat, scooter traffic, sudden rain, and temple ceremonies that close streets. That is normal, not a holiday glitch.

Locals, Balinese neighbours, and visitor hubs

Canggu and Ubud coworking scenes sit next to Balinese villages. Good neighbours learn quiet hours during ceremonies, do not block offerings, and hire local staff fairly in rupiah.

Speaking a few words of Bahasa Indonesia and greeting security or warung owners goes further than expecting English everywhere outside tourist strips.
