Volcano

Is there a volcano in Bali? Batur, Agung, and the volcano jeep

Updated · By the Bali Activity Tours desk in Ubud

Short answer

Yes. Bali has two active volcanoes: Mount Batur in Kintamani, which last erupted in 2000, and Mount Agung, Bali's highest peak at about 3,000 metres, which last erupted in 2022. The older Bratan caldera around Bedugul has no known eruption in the last 12,000 years. Volcano jeep tours run only on Batur; Agung is climbed on foot.

How many volcanoes Bali has, which are active, why the jeep tours run on Mount Batur, who decides when it is safe, and what a volcano jeep costs.

How many volcanoes does Bali have?

Bali is a volcanic island on the Sunda Arc, the chain of volcanoes that runs along Indonesia from Sumatra through Java and Bali to the east. The mountains along its northern half are volcanoes.

The Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program lists two Bali volcanoes that have erupted in the last 12,000 years, and a third, older complex:

  • Mount Agung, about 3,000 metres, Bali's highest peak. Its last eruptions were in 2022, after an episode that began in 2017.
  • Mount Batur, about 1,700 metres, inside the Batur caldera in Kintamani. Last eruption: 2000.
  • Buyan-Bratan, the caldera around Bedugul with three crater lakes, including Mount Batukaru to the south-west. No eruption is known in the last 12,000 years; its cones are covered in forest.

Batur or Agung: which volcano?

Bali has two volcanoes visitors ask about. Only one has jeep tracks.

How active is Mount Batur?

Batur is one of Indonesia's active volcanoes. The Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program records its last eruption in 2000, after a moderate eruption in 1974 and a run of smaller ones in the 1990s. The Batur geopark counts at least 22 eruptions between 1804 and 2000.

Thin steam from vents near the summit is normal for Batur. The lava you drive across is the visible record of that history: flows from eruptions in 1963, 1968, and 1974 still lie bare on the caldera floor.

Who decides when it is safe

Indonesia's volcano agency, PVMBG, monitors Batur and sets an alert level from Level I (Normal) to Level IV, the highest. It publishes the current level on MAGMA Indonesia. When the level rises, the agency closes a radius around the crater, and jeeps and treks inside it stop.

What the jeep shows you

  • The outer caldera wall, about 10 by 13.5 kilometres, formed about 29,300 years ago
  • Lake Batur, a crescent-shaped crater lake about 7.7 kilometres long
  • Black lava fields from the 1963, 1968, and 1974 eruptions
  • Mount Abang, the highest point of the caldera rim, and Mount Agung beyond it
  • Naturally warm springs at Toya Bungkah on the lake shore, where you can add a soak

A protected landscape

Batur joined UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network in 2012 and is now a UNESCO Global Geopark of about 370 square kilometres, covering both calderas, the lake, the lava flows, and the hot springs. Lake Batur and the temple Pura Ulun Danu Batur are also part of Bali's UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape, inscribed in 2012.

Stay on the tracks, take rubbish back to the jeep, and leave lava rocks where they are.
