Ayung rafting with kids: ages, swimming, and family tips

Updated · By the Bali Activity Tours desk in Ubud

Short answer

Ayung River rafting suits families when children are about 7 or older with basic swimming confidence. Everyone wears a helmet and life jacket; a crew guide steers. Insurance covers about ages 6–65. Minimum two guests on the booking — there is no separate child fare. Rp 450.000 each. For calmer water from about age 6, choose Wos tubing instead.

Honest age and swimming notes for Ayung rafting with children, stairs at the gorge, and when tubing or a private raft is the better family pick.

Age and swimming confidence

The practical age for Ayung rafting is about 7 and up, with basic swimming confidence. The river is Class II–III: splashy, not extreme, but children still need to hold a paddle command and stay seated. Insurance on the ticket covers about ages 6–65; tell us ages under 6 or over 65 when you book.

There is no child discount. Every seat is Rp 450.000 for two or more guests. A booking needs at least two people, so a parent and one child already clear the minimum.

What parents should plan for

Bases sit above the gorge. Expect a few hundred steps down at the start and a climb back up — the exact count depends on the put-in that day. Take it slowly; nobody leaves without you. Pack a full change of clothes, strap-on sandals, and a waterproof phone case if you bring a camera.

Morning 08:30 suits families who want cooler air. The 11:00 slot pairs with a Sedang ATV morning if older kids want mud first; younger children often ride as tandem ATV passengers.

Private raft or tubing instead

Book private Ayung rafting (Rp 950.000 per person for two or more) when you want a dedicated guide and your family only on the raft. Choose Wos tubing when the group includes younger children or anyone nervous in moving water. The family activities guide covers ATV and jeep age notes too.
