Ayung rafting for beginners: Class II–III near Ubud

Updated · By the Bali Activity Tours desk in Ubud

Short answer

Ayung River rafting near Ubud suits first-timers: Class II–III means splashy teamwork with calm stretches, not extreme drops. A crew guide steers every raft after an English safety briefing; you paddle on command. Helmet and life jacket are provided. From about age 7 with basic swimming confidence. Rp 450.000 per person for two or more, lunch included. Minimum two guests.

Why the Ayung is the beginner-friendly Ubud raft, what Class II–III feels like, and who should choose Wos tubing or Telaga Waja instead.

What Class II–III feels like

On the Ayung you sit in an inflatable raft with a crew guide at the back. After a safety briefing you learn paddle commands, then run about 12 km of canyon: jungle walls, waterfalls, carved stone panels, and splashy drops with quieter pools between them. It is whitewater teamwork, not a sit-on tube float.

Class II–III is the band most first-timers want near Ubud. It is splashier than Wos tubing and calmer than Telaga Waja in east Bali (Class III–IV), which this desk does not sell.

What beginners need to know

No prior rafting experience is required. Expect steps down to the river and back up — take them slowly. Wear clothes you can get wet; the base has showers, towels, and changing rooms. Insurance covers about ages 6–65; the practical age note for this run is about 7+ with basic swimming confidence.

Departures are 08:30, 11:00, and 12:00 (last booking 12:00). Pay on the spot at the river base: cash, QRIS, or card (+3%). Nothing is charged online.

  • English safety briefing before launch
  • Helmet, life jacket, and paddle provided
  • Crew guide steers; you paddle on command
  • Lunch after the run is in the ticket

When to pick something else

Choose Wos tubing if anyone is nervous in moving water or you are booking solo. Choose a private Ayung raft (Rp 950.000 per person for two or more) if you want a dedicated guide and your raft only. For harder east-Bali whitewater, look at Telaga Waja with another operator — we sell the Ayung only.
